The Fuel Utilizing New Media

Having launched at the beginning of the school year in 2014, The Fuel becomes the first online newspaper at Judson High School. “We are the largest school with an online student newspaper in San Antonio”, publication adviser Mr. Cabrera.

More importantly, the journalism department, which includes The Fuel and The Rocket, will begin to use different forms of new media to promote the website, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

“Our staff is going to use Facebook and twitter to display the student’s stories”, Mr. Cabrera said.

Student and teacher staffs are already following The Fuel Online and promoting the website. Now, it’s time for the general public to know what is going on at Judson High School.

The Fuel will utilize Facebook and Twitter. There are 1.19 billion monthly active users, 874 million mobile users, and 728 million daily users on Facebook. On Twitter, there are 255million monthly active users, 198 million daily users, and 100 million daily users.

“We’re going to be using Instagram for thousands of student photos,” Mr. Cabrera said.

Currently Instagram has 150 million monthly active users and get 1,000 comments per second, 8,500 likes per second, totaling 1.2 billion likes per day. Utilizing new forms of media is a good way to promote the journalism department.

“It is interesting because all the big newspaper organizations have websites, and now high schools are following. I hope that the student body gets on board and that they start promoting us too,” Mr. Cabrera said.
