In an effort to increase parental involvement in their community schools, Principal Jésus Hernandez III is introducing “P.O.P.” – Parents on Patrol, an initiative to allow parents to be watchful of all students on campus.
The idea comes from Dads on Duty, a group of about 40 dads that recently gained national attention for stepping in and assisting administrators and teachers after their school needed help.
“Just seeing us and (that) we’re embracing them in a different manner, it makes all the difference in the world,” one dad told CNN.
The dads presence on campus significantly lowered fights on campus. So much so, the dads noticed zero fights on campus since their presence was felt, and the Mayor of Shreveport wants the initiative to be implemented citywide.
Hernandez is excited to begin the process of welcoming parents on campus to act as guardians for students, helping students get to class and ensuring their safety.
“This is an innovative way to get our community more involved in our schools,” Hernandez said.
An initial meeting will be held on campus next Wednesday, November 10, 2021, in A115 at noon. During that meeting, Hernandez will elicit support from the community and train volunteers in what their role will be on campus, including shifts parents can take.
“I want to involve as many parents and guardians as possible,” Hernandez said. “When it comes to the success of Judson High School, it takes all of us to remind each other what Rocket Pride is all about. This can really be transformative for our community.”
Before the entire initiative begins, parents are going to be required to fill out the district’s volunteer form prior to the meeting. Once they do that, Hernandez will contact those who want to participate and begin the process.
“I love this school. I love the students. I want us all to have a safe environment for all students,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez is hoping to get this program started as soon as possible. For more information, you can contact him at [email protected]
