After falling asleep with tamale masa in his hand, Principal Hernandez realized his life led him in the wrong direction. After graduation, Hernandez will move on from Judson High School and Judson ISD to open his own tamale truck, which he hopes will bring him all the joys and smells of his Mexican tradition.

“He’s always had this love for food,” a family member said. “This isn’t surprising.”

His love for tamales started when he was young. Growing up in Brownsville, Texas, tamales were always a part of the family’s diet.

“Sometimes, we would have it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” the family member said. “I don’t know why he went into education. He should’ve started one after high school.”

Hernandez has spent his life committed to bettering the schools he ran. With retirement around the corner, it was common sense to buy a food truck and begin his own business.

“Our family has the best tamales in all of Converse,” another family member said. “I am sure we will be successful.”

Sources say he purchased an old seafood food truck to transform it into a pure tamale truck. If approved, the same source said he plans to be parked outside Rutledge Stadium to sell after football games.
