Seniors Have It All

Many seniors will tell you they deserve to be able to leave campus for lunch or have a more relaxed dress code. Seniors already get “senior benefits” and giving them anymore may be a bit excessive.

Some seniors argue they deserve these privileges simply because they are seniors. They reason that just because they have been here for four years, they need to have special treatment and luxuries. A senior might say they are more mature, and thus, will be responsible. However, a mature person wouldn’t ask for more after they have been given dinner and dessert, right?

Let’s discuss what seniors already get. They get easier schedules, especially towards the end of the year when everyone else is testing and they are graduating. Many can leave early if they have already earned their credits. More so, they don’t have to come in until noon during those state testing days. They get to exempt more final exams than any other class. And at the beginning of the year, seniors were the only ones allowed to attend a pep rally. Could asking for anything more be considered greedy?

There are flaws with what seniors want as well. Our dress code is already pretty lenient. If you work at an office for even forty years, you don’t get to show up in booty shorts and a tank top. The school is trying to teach a life lesson. More so, letting seniors leave campus for lunch will give some the chance not to come back to school and that could lead to preventable attendance, academic problems, or even safety concerns.

Once you allow seniors to have a more relaxed dress code or to leave campus for lunch, other groups will start asking for these things too. A lot of juniors can drive and will want to be off campus for lunch like the seniors. It’s very much like a monkey see, monkey do analogy.

Seniors already get benefits, and understandably so. They are seniors. It is the end of their high school journey. But asking for any more is a bit of a reach. It seems that they may want unreasonable things, and giving it to them will ultimately lead to other groups demanding the same thing. The way things are is perfectly fine.
