At first, the task was a very daunting idea for senior Darron Hill.
However, something in him managed to prevail through all his doubts, giving Hill the confidence to do what he felt he was called to.
For Hill, that “something” was none other than Jesus.
On Friday, January 19, in G111, a gathering took place, the purpose of which had not been seen in recent Judson High School history, until now. It was a revival bible study, and it’s to Hill’s credit it happened at all. Saying Hill is “just a Christian” would be an understatement. From his Instagram page dedicated almost entirely to sharing scriptures, to his avid listening of gospel music, it’s suffice to say Hill is extremely spirited in regards to his faith. It’s with this passion that Hill made a mission for himself, to find a way to share his verve. And that’s exactly what he did. The origins of Hill’s strong passion began outside of Judson, as did the original idea to have bible studies at school.
“I needed a community, and that is when I first started attending church for the first time,” Hill said. “I found this good community, and wondered why we didn’t have anything like this at school.”
Hill soon decided the time for wondering was over, and the time for acting had to start.
But he needed some help getting his idea of the ground, and luckily, he knew just where to find it.
“I had Ms. Diaz’s class the first nine-weeks, and when she asked what our favorite activity was to do, I mentioned that I loved bible study. She was like ‘oh I love Jesus’ and I thought ‘wow there’s a teacher who’s bold in her faith as well’,” Hill said. “That’s where I got the idea to come to her with the plan, and then we started organizing it all.”
With marketing teacher Ms. Diaz to advise the after-school bible studies, and with a Friday meeting date set, all Hill had to do was start advertising, so he’d have people to fellowship with.
That’s just the thing, though. He wasn’t sure if anyone would show up in the first place.
“I didn’t think anyone would come. I thought it was just going to be me, my sister, and Ms. Diaz for the first week. I posted about it on my Instagram story, but I still wasn’t sure how it was going to go.”
Contrary to what he expected, there was a decent turnout for the first meeting. As people slowly pooled in, it seemed Hill’s efforts wouldn’t go unnoticed.
“I’ve been a close friend of Darron, and I was happy seeing him step up, so I wanted to support him. I liked it a lot, and I’ll for sure be coming back,” said senior Asante Duncan, who just recently attended the latest bible study last Friday.
Hill knew that these bible studies had to continue. Not only for the rest of the year, but hopefully, even after he graduates.
“I would love for this to be a continuing thing at Judson. Maybe someone here who’s a sophomore or junior who feels that same passion as I do will be leading this next year when I’m gone,” Hill said.
While he’s here, though, Hill has very clear intentions on what he wants his bible studies to accomplish.
“I want this to be a light for people. People who are in dark places like I was,” Hill said.
Hill hosts his bible studies every Friday, from 4:45pm to 5:30pm, in G111.
