Presenting the flags is an honorable job. A set few of students in JROTC have that honor.

The Honor Guard is a flag and rifle drill team that presents the flags at different events within the district. The team consists of 20 varsity cadets and 3 different competition teams: girls, boys, and co-ed, who meet 3 times a week after school for practice. Commanding the team is third year member C/1Lt Anthony Woodard. Co-commanding is second year member C/TSgt Jaimie Colon, and the head instructor is MSgt. Timothy Netters.

“Teaching cadets honor guard is something that I’m truly passionate about.” Colon stated. “I love watching them grow along the months.”

Honor guard presents at dozens of events a year, more specifically local competitions during the spring and fall seasons. During competitions, the teams do a series of elaborate drill movements and commands, followed by a routine inspection.

“Competition is an experience like no other. I wouldn’t want to spend my weekends any other way.” Colon said.

Along with competition, honor guard does a number of events around campus and the surrounding areas of the school including presenting the colors at football games, Rampage/Spurs games, and openings of local buildings where they present the flags during the national anthem.

With the winter season hitting hard, it is been difficult for the team to practice as frequently. Nevertheless, they persevere. No matter the weather or time of year, the team still manages to find a way to practice and perform together. The team’s determination and unity are some of the many things that make this team so great.

“Practicing with my friends is the most fun part of the team,” senior Albert Reyes says.

Their alliance is what truly makes the teams so special. Bonding is what keeps them strong.

“I love how they’re my family. We continue to work so hard and have fun while doing it. This team has ups and downs but I love it more than anything,” Colon added.
