Dancers, Cheer and Color Guard Put On Jubilee
More stories from Mary Williams
On February 18, the 2015 Jubilee was held in the main gym. The Jubilee showcased the color guard, cheer, and dance teams various competition routines that they’ve been working on throughout the school year.
The Jubilee kicked off with an upbeat performance by the cheer novice squad, followed by an equally enthusiastic routine by the cheer intermediate squad. Afterwards, the Starlites performed their military dance, being sure to stay in sync the entire time. The Galaxies followed shortly after with a lyrical bit, a relaxed break from the cheerful attitude of the show.
“Preparing was hectic,” junior Natalie Lara said. “But it was fun and I loved performing with the team.”
After a short break, the Satellite team and Starlite officers brought the fun back with pom routines. The Satellites came back with a kick routine, and the Galaxies returned with a jazz routine. The Starlites continued the show with a hip hop performance, including modern aspects into it as well. The Galaxie officers ended the first half of the night with a bubbly jazz piece.
“Jazz was my favorite dance,” freshmen Gabrielle Herrera said. “Everybody was coordinated and flowing together.”
After an intermission, the B guard started off strong with “Freight Train,” a simple routine. Following directly after was JV Guard with “Clown,” a moving routing that showcased the entire squad’s skills and talent. Lastly, varsity guard then performed a beautiful routine, showing off their hours of hard work and determination.
“I feel like we did good as a team on our performance,” sophomore Jessica Chapa said. “There could be improvements but overall we shined.”
Seniors MyKinzee McConnel and Jeri Hubbard performed their lyrical solos routines. The solos were graceful and relaxing, a different feel from the rest of the show but equally as entertaining.
The Starlite officers came in with a novelty dance an upbeat piece with various sports props and costumes, afterwards returning one final time for a modern hip hop performance.
The satellites did their competition jazz number, directly followed by the galaxie team’s final dance of the night, a kick routine. The starlites ended strong with pom choreography. “We’ve been practicing hard and fixing our mistakes to make this jubilee turn out good,” senior Dannette Gonzalez said. “It went well.”
For the final routine of the night the senior varsity cheerleaders brought in some special guests of their own and performed a hip hop routine, an opportunity for them to get creative and throw in their own special moves. A perfect way to end the last Jubilee for the seniors.
The performers were able to make this Jubilee a success with help from their directors: dance directors Stephanie Collet and Sarah Howe, cheer coaches James Devno and Latoya Jones, and color guard director Kim Booher. All of the work and effort put into the show was well worth it.
