Mr. Lowrey has been a social studies teacher at Judson High School for many years. During this time, he has left his mark on students’ lives due to his unique personality and way of connecting with students.
Lowrey feels that he connects with students unintentionally, chalking it up to his talkative personality. He also believes his way of bonding with students comes from his enjoyment of being a teacher.
“You guys are the good part of this job. If I can’t appreciate you guys, I don’t know what I’m doing here,” said Lowrey.
Lowrey also recognizes his distinct teaching strategy, and claims it is to make the material easier for his students to understand.
“I know for a fact that our brains are physiologically hardwired to capture and remember stories, and so when I try to pitch any material, if I can turn it into some kind of story, [students have] got a higher likelihood of latching onto it.”
Students who took Lowrey’s class before agree that he is different from other teachers.
As senior Julie Villanueva looks back at her experience with Lowrey, she states, “My freshman year, I noticed a common theme with teachers not liking freshmen and the immaturity that came with teaching them. Mr. Lowrey welcomed every student in the most friendly way possible. He’s quick to brighten the mood of any class he has.”
Another student, senior Emily Colvard, stated “You could tell that everything he taught about was stuff he was really passionate about, which made it easy to be passionate about it alongside him.”
Colvard also believes Lowrey’s unique way of teaching made the class better. She claims he “embraced teaching in a way that was interactive and immersive. His class wasn’t just note taking or memorization, it was complex discussion, thought and activities surrounding the topics we were learning about.”
These students also claim Lowrey had a positive impact in their lives. Villanueva believes that she wouldn’t have found her future career if she didn’t have Lowrey as a teacher. “My group had to do research about human trafficking. To help my group out, he called a friend who works against the problem. After that Q&A call, I knew that was the career I wanted to pursue.”
Colvard stated, “He pushed me to work on and join the things through which I eventually met most of my friends today, which I may never have done without him.”
Lowrey started his teaching career at Judson High School and has spent all his eight years teaching at this school. Lowrey stated “I came into this one [Judson High School], sat in with several other social studies teachers and I just loved the kids here immediately.”
Ever since then, Lowrey has left a mark on his students’ lives simply by doing his job, and he doesn’t intend to stop teaching anytime soon. “I’m planning on doing this until my wife makes me retire. I’ll be doing this at least until I’m sixty.”
Until then, he hopes to maintain the same teaching style and personality that has made him loved by students. “I’m hoping to teach their kids. Send them here.”
