For 25 years, “SpongeBob Squarepants” has captivated the hearts of many like myself, and its iconic “Krabby Patty” has captured the stomachs of just as many, as people have racked their brains trying to recreate the iconic sandwich.
Thus in celebration of the “SpongeBob Squarepants” 25th anniversary, Wendy’s, as the exclusive national quick-service restaurant brand, has partnered up with Nickelodeon and Paramount to satisfy the imagination of fans with the limited time only “Krabby Patty Kollab.” This is a program that is meant to bring Krabby Patties from the world renowned “SpongeBob Squarepants” show into real life and to be eaten for the first time ever.
In the spirit of honesty, I am someone who has eaten and enjoyed Wendy’s for years now, happily consuming their “4 for 4 meal” any chance I got. So with that being said, I felt comfort knowing that a place like Wendy’s would be bringing my childhood dream food to the real world. As someone who grew up consuming all kinds of Spongebob content, the love I have for the fictional universe and its content is immense. So once I learned that Wendy’s would be doing a collaboration to bring the “Krabby Patty” to real life, I felt it would be a disservice to my love for the cartoon not to review it.
“In a world of people cutting corners, Wendy’s is known for quality in everything we do – from our fresh, famous food to collaborations with brands that our fans love,” stated Lindsay Radkoski, U.S. Chief Marketing Officer for The Wendy’s Company.
This new collaboration came with the “Krabby Patty Kollab Burger” and “Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty.” You can buy them separately or together in a meal, which includes french fries. The “Krabby Patty Kollab Burger” consists of two ground beef patties, tomatoes, two slices of American cheese, crinkle cut pickles, lettuce, onions, sea salt and the “Secret Krabby Patty Sauce” all squished between two premium buns. The burger by itself costs $5.99, whilst the meal costs $10.99.
Overall, the Krabby Patty was a decent burger, and for its price it was nicely sized. The only thing which really separated it taste wise from other items on the menu was its secret sauce. The sauce was incredibly tasty, but it did have some tang to it. However, the tang wasn’t enough to throw off the taste of the burger. Rating the Krabby Patty alone, I would give it a 6.5 out of 10 as it was only an above average burger.
Next is the “Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty,” which costs $2.69 by itself. This may be seen as quite pricey for a frosty, but would I say it’s worth the price? Here’s how I feel about it: Going in, I hadn’t ever heard of this Pineapple Frosty in SpongeBob, so I had no expectations for it to begin with.
Though after trying it, I will say that it wasn’t bad. It didn’t have an overpowering artificial taste. In fact it was quite subtle and rejuvenating, and when combined with the slight taste of pineapple, the drink was pleasant. Though I do wish the pineapple had a more dominant flavor, and wasn’t as laidback as it was. I’d rate the Pineapple Frosty a solid 5 out of 10, it was just your average frosty from Wendy’s, nothing exciting.
Considering everything like the price of the “Krabby Patty Kollab Meal,” everything it included and its taste, I would rate the meal a comforting 7 out of 10. Whilst the individual items weren’t doing anything groundbreaking taste wise, the overall meal was carried by how fun it is. I’ve always wanted to try a Krabby Patty, and thanks to Wendy’s I was able to accomplish this mission.
Though, whilst trying the meal I wondered if the new meal was similar to any pre-existing Wendy’s meal, so I checked the menu. After doing so, I discovered that the “Krabby Patty Kollab Meal” is incredibly similar to the Wendy’s double patty meal “Dave’s Double Meal,” as they both share the $10.99 price tag, and the burger themselves have the same ingredients, except the “Dave’s Double” lacks the secret sauce of the “Krabby Patty.” Along with this “Dave’s Double,” comes a fountain drink instead of the Pineapple Frosty.
Even though all Wendy’s really did is add on some new sauce to an already existing burger, and included a new flavor of Fosty, Wendy’s deserves their props, as it was their marketing genius which allowed them to procure a collaboration with Nickelodeon and Paramount to push for this new meal, grabbing the attention of SpongeBob and Wendy’s fans alike.
Regardless of how I’ve rated the meal, my taste buds and thoughts are mine alone to have. Discounting the similarities between the “Krabby Patty Kollab Meal,” and “Dave’s Double Meal,” I would personally recommend you to try the meal for yourself and see if it makes you want to steal the secret formula too.
