The Judson Rockets (3-7) lost at home in a back and forth game to the New Braunfels Unicorns (6-4), 37-35.
In the first quarter New Braunfels scored a quick touchdown to put them up 7-0. The Rocket offense was not discouraged by the Unicorns early scoring, as they quickly got within first down territory. After the Unicorns were called for roughing the passer, the Rockets ball was now at the thirty yard line. The offense made the most of this opportunity and Senior wide receiver, Demo McGarity, electrified the crowd with a thrilling touchdown to tie the game 7-7. The Unicorns walked the ball in for a touchdown at the end of the first quarter to give them a 14-7 lead.
To start the second quarter, Nathaniel Stanley completed a big gain for a first down near the ten yard line. Stanley then ran through the Unicorn’s defense to even the game at 14-14. The Unicorns settled for a field goal at the end of the second quarter, to take back the lead 17-14.
The Rockets began the scoring with Demo McGarity recovering a fumble and scoring the touchdown to clasp the lead at 21-17. New Braunfels countered that action, scoring a touchdown and wrestling back the lead 24-21. The Rockets tried their best to get the ball in the end zone, but unfortunately couldn’t score. The Unicorns then went on to extend their lead 31-21, ending the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was exciting, and had the spectators on both sides of the field on the edge of their seats.
Senior Myles Davis caught a pass from quarterback Elijah Favela to get the crowd on their feet and cut into the lead 31-28. The Rockets then strung together a couple of defensive stops to prevent the Unicorns from scoring. With the ball in the Rockets possession, the offense moved quickly to get the ball down the field. Davis then scored a touchdown to wrestle back the lead from the Unicorns with 55 seconds left on the clock, 38-28. With only one second left on the clock, the Unicorns scored a touchdown to win the game 38-35, leaving the crowd stunned.
While the Rockets lost the game, the battle has just begun. The boys are off to the playoffs!
