For the Judson Girls track team, reaching the apex of High School sports is a common occurrence.
In their history, the Lady Rockets have won the state championship back-to-back in 2014 and 2015.
This past season the Rockets won district and area championships and were runner-up at the regional meet. The Lady Rockets also had the largest number of athletes qualify to state in individual events compared to recent years.
Because some of the girls may feel intimidated by the past success of the team, Head Girls Track coach, Christina Holland, reminds them that track is not just about the results, but about the journey.
“Track is hard, so when you’re off the track you have to find motivation within yourself and within your team. Instead of just staring at the clock, we emphasize how fun it is to see your sister set a new PR or break a record, which is what is motivating to them,” Coach Holland said.
In order for the team to make it back to Austin this May, the goal for everyone is to keep advancing and reaching new heights.
With getting so close in the past seasons, to either advancing to State or winning the meet, there are certain expectations for the Lady Rockets to get back to the highest level of competition. Senior Dayja’nae Pettit recognizes they’ll have to put in a lot of effort to reach their goals this season.
“Since we did have a very elite team last year, we’ll definitely have to continue to put in the work to keep the tradition [of doing well in the postseason] alive,” Pettit said.
Though the Lady Rockets have had the chance to reach success in the past, a part of the main focus is enjoying the limited time left they have with their teammates.
Track is hard, and practices can be grueling, so sharing a bond with the people you call your teammates is integral to success. Sophomore Genesis Cordero relishes in the opportunity she has to spend time with her senior teammates before they graduate.
“I’m most excited for enjoying the time I do with the seniors and being able to learn from them,” Cordero said.
The Lady Rockets first home meet is on March 2, 2024 at Rutledge Stadium and it is sure to be a good one! Come out and cheer the Rockets on as they look to go the distance this season
