Keeping her fans on their toes with snippets released throughout the years, Mariah the Scientist has finally put out her third studio album.
On Oct 27, 2023 Mariah The Scientist released her album “To Be Eaten Alive” on all streaming platforms, following the massive success of her previous album, “RY RY World”.
This is her first album released with a new record label, Epic Records, after signing a deal with them on Oct 16, 2023.
“I was reluctant to sign a new deal, but I was excited to find a partner that understands me as an artist, and has the infrastructure to support me in ways I need most,” Mariah said in a previous interview on social media.
The inspiration behind the album’s title was touched on in an earlier interview as well, with MTV VEVO, where Mariah stated, “Scorpions (she’s a Scorpio) like myself, are considered non-social and solitary animals, interacting only on rare occasions such as courtship.”
“For the grand and notable lion, the scorpion seems to be a small feat. They are an unpredictable match and yet they establish a mutual respect for each other’s curious differences. They are both natural born predators. This bond requires sacrifice, trust, and discipline” Mariah said. “As for the venomous scorpion, to be eaten alive is to kill.”
The album is 27 minutes long with a total of 10 songs.
Heaven is a place on Earth:
To start the album off, Mariah gives us this short two minute introduction. This song touches the challenges and sacrifices that come with ambition. The line “think of all the places I’ll see ‘cause of this pen” indicates the power of writing and storytelling, as its influenced her journey thus far. She also addresses challenges faced in relationships, including how her and her partner deal with the hardships of their personal lives together. Overall, “Heaven is a place on Earth” explores the pursuit of personal dreams and the sacrifices that come along with it. It’s the first track on the album and sets the tone for the piece as a whole.
From a woman:
“From a woman” was released on Oct 12, 2023, a week prior to the album. This song is believed to serve as a “female” version to her fiance’s, rapper Young Thug’s, single “From A Man”. Both songs start off with a soothing melody and then go into a repetitive beat, both beats being similar, however “From a Women’s” beat being softer. I like this song because it’s basically a love track addressing Thug directly, saying “Won’t call you slime ‘cause it wont fit, I see you more than this.”
Most people on social media say this album is a “ love letter” because of this song and the song he features in at the end of the album, “Ride.” I agree with this, considering most of the songs on this album are inspired by different emotions and experiences of being in love, including the complexities that stem from it.
Bout Mine:
“Bout mine” was first released as a single on October 14, 2022 and is the sixth track on the album. The beginning of the song talks about how she doesn’t deserve the miss calls and the mistreatment. She then goes into saying “I won’t let you forget me, I remind you every time,” making that the transition of the song where she stresses she wants everything to work out, and will do whatever it takes to get her lover back. I like the range of this song and how she can control her voice going high then low, as well as her lyrics being a masterpiece. I love that the lyrics make sense and are easy to catch on to what she is trying to say. This song was kind of a surprise on the album, seeing that it was released last year, but it adds more “spice” to it.
Good Times:
“Good Times” is one of my favorite songs on the album. Her lyrics are so relatable, vulnerable, and shows she is unafraid to deal with the troubles of being hopelessly in love. The thing that got me in this song is the melody and the beat, which sounded perfectly with her voice. However, the lyrics are kind of surprising and hard to understand at the same time. She goes back and forth saying how she loves this man and wants to go back to the “Good Times”, but towards the end of the song, she states how she doesn’t want to hear him call her his “favorite girl”. This shows the underlying struggle of dealing with love and logic in a toxic relationship. She then goes into how she really doesn’t know how to trust him and doesn’t want to make a fool out of herself, which is very relatable as a young teenager. In my opinion this is the best song on the album as it exhibits Mariah’s true human emotions.
Love Sick:
“Love sick” explores the emotional turmoil and confusion that comes with being in love. The song explains a relationship that is both intoxicating and painful. The first verse is Mariah expressing how different she wants things to be, as she sees everything going wrong. The line “In my eyes, nobody gets it, in my heart, in my defense, I’m just lovesick, something we can’t resist,” shows how Mariah is feeling isolated and how others are unable to truly understand the depth of her emotions. This is a great example of a “stuck on someone” song, where she sings the different emotions of what she feels while loving someone. I think the song is pretty great. I’m a big fan of her voice and she just sings this very well and is once again, good with her voice control.
77 Degrees:
This song is one out of three features on this album, and there is not one feature that I like. Usually, 21 Savage never lets me down, however he in fact did on this song. The start of this song isn’t bad, but as Mariah starts to get into it, it just doesn’t hit. It’s fast and confusing. When 21 comes in, there’s so much going on and overall not a good blend of sounds. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t like how the approach to making the song was. I like the collaboration, however I wish the song had a different turn out.
Overall this album was a success. I have all love for this album and she definitely put her heart and soul into this. I do agree with fans’ statements that this album is more of a love album, contrasting with her previous album “ RY RY World”, which was more of a heartbreak, revenge album. She is a great success story, being a sudden upcoming female artist that got signed over night.
