The Judson Spanish Honor Society is in full swing this school year, having had their first monthly meeting Aug. 28, 2024. The meeting welcomed old and new members alike.
Club sponsor Señora Brinson, who has dedicated three years to building the organization, chose to sponsor the club because it gives Hispanic people a safe place to be themselves.
“I became the sponsor of the club because it helps the culture,” Brinson stated. “You can meet new people and hear where they come from and their life stories. I am Latina. It’s something I do mostly for my kids who are Hispanic and need a place to be.”
This school year, Brinson wants to expand the Spanish Honor Society and to get people to understand the purpose of the club.
“I would like for our club to grow, and I also would like for us to be more present on campus. Because people know about us, but they never know exactly what we are,” Brinson confided.
Brinson spoke on the benefits that the club has to offer.
“For the Spanish Honor Society, we have a pool of scholarships that you can apply to by being a member. Some students take advantage of that, but some others may not because you have to write essays,” Brinson explained.
Member of two years and current President of the Spanish Honor Society, junior Adjoa Brobey, said that being in the club is beneficial because it improves your chances of getting into colleges and can improve your Spanish skills.
“It looks really good on your college application, and it can also help you learn Spanish if you talk amongst others that also want to improve,” Brobey remarked.
Brobey reminisced on participating in the annual induction ceremony that the Spanish Honor Society holds in the spring. In the ceremony, the members each recite an oath and light a candle to symbolize their everlasting commitment to the club.
“I would say [my favorite memory is] the induction, because that’s when it felt like I became a true member,” Brobey said.
A dedicated member and vice president of the Spanish Honor Society, junior Aaliyah Sexton, who went up in rank from Historian this school year, has been in the organization all three years of high school.
“I wanted to become an officer because I like being a leader (leadership is kind of my thing), and being able to help others makes me happy,” Sexton described.
The requirements to be in the club are an 85% GPA or higher, 10 volunteer hours, and no disciplinary issues. The club meets the last Wednesday of every month. If you’re interested in joining, the next meeting is next Wednesday, Sept. 25 in Señora Brinson’s classroom, P122.
