Student Council Conducts Food Drive

Every year, Judson High School conducts a food drive for the needy, which is headed by Judson’s Student Council. According to sponsor Ms. Samantha Matthis, the food drive has been something the school has done for years.

“A food drive is something that council has done in the past. So, we just decided to stay with tradition,” Matthis said.

The tradition has proven to be very successful. The Student Council collected over 100 cans from students and organizations, as well as a generous monetary donation from the Judson football team. For the first time, Student Council paired up with the National Honor Society, to help spread the word.

“I would love to see that partnership grow for future food drives,” Matthis said.

The cans were transferred to a local food bank called GRASP on November 20, 2014. GRASP, a human service organization, was established in 1983. The organization helps adults and children that are disadvantaged with their everyday needs. GRASP programs offer emergency assistance to those experiencing household trouble and who live in areas of Bexar or Guadalupe counties.

“Speaking on behalf of the student council officers, it felt good to help out a great cause,” Matthis said.

The council’s goal was not the amount of cans they received, but the amount of student effort and involvement around the school. Ultimately, the council was glad they were able to give such generous amounts of cans and money to GRASP, as they were very appreciative.

Hopefully, next year, the drive will be bigger and better. “I would change getting the word out sooner so more people can participate,” Matthis said.
