On October 12, 2023 the Judson Rockets (2-5) fell to the Clemens Buffaloes (4-3) in their homecoming game at D.W Rutledge Stadium 17-24.
The first quarter started off with the Clemens Buffaloes scoring a 100 yard kickoff return, putting them up 7-0. The Rockets came right back at the Buffs with a kickoff return of their own by Senior Myles Davis, quickly tying the game at 7-7. With back-to-back 100 yard kickoff returns, this set the stage for an exciting homecoming game with both sides engaged and cheering for their home team. Further along in the first quarter, the Buffaloes scored a touchdown to take the lead 14-7. The Rockets offense was fired up and quickly were at first and goal. Quarterback Elijah Favela quickly pushed through the Clemens defense to tie the game 14-14. Senior Myles Davis intercepted the ball ending the quarter on a positive note for the Rockets.
Between the first and second quarters, the 1993 Judson football State Champions were recognized in honor of the 30th anniversary of their great achievement.
To start the second quarter, The Rockets were unable to score and Clemens took possession of the ball. The Buffaloes offense quickly made the most of this opportunity and scored a touchdown to put them ahead 21-14. After the Rockets gained possession of the ball, they showed tremendous fight but were unable to score. The Rockets defense did some great things, causing the Buffaloes to struggle with getting the ball in the end zone, and instead opted for a field goal to add onto their lead, 24-14.
During halftime the homecoming court winners were announced, causing great excitement from the crowd. Toward the last five minutes of halftime, the 1983 Judson State Championship team were also recognized for their achievement, in honor of their 40th anniversary.
In the third quarter the Rockets strung together a handful of great defensive stops to give the Rockets possession. Though the Rockets had some great moments on offense, they ultimately turned the ball over. The third quarter had many back and forths, but both teams’ offenses were held scoreless.
The fourth quarter was eventful. A carry by Jack Call gave the Rockets a much needed spark on offense, allowing the Rockets to get in field goal range to cut into the Buffaloes lead 24-17. The Rockets were able to intercept the ball, and fired the crowd up. Unfortunately a sack on the quarterback effectively ended the game, with the Clemens Buffaloes regaining possession. The game’s final score was 24-17.
The Rockets (2-5) play the San Marcos Rattlesnakes at Rattler Stadium on Friday, October 20th. The theme for next week’s game is Western, so put on your cowboy boots and come support our Rockets!
