There is no need for small talk
Being an introvert and hating small talk go hand in hand. Almost like peanut butter and jelly go together. There’s just something about small talk that rankles me.
If we’re not trying to make a connection, then what do we need to talk for? Small talk is never necessary, ever! People perceive silence as boring, but there’s nothing more boring to me than the question, “How was your day?”
That question doesn’t show somebody that you care; it shows your lack of imagination. There are so many other questions to ask somebody that would prompt a better answer than just “Good,” or “Okay.”
“What was the favorite part of your day?”
“What song would define your day, and what lead you to pick that song?”
“What was the most interesting thing you heard someone say today?”
Instead, I’m faced with the lackluster question of “How was your day?” And I know it’s some people’s way of starting a conversation. But if your opening line is going to be a unimaginative as that, then I’m not too sure I want to converse with you to begin with.
It may come off as rude, but I have vowed to myself to never answer the question of, “How was your day?”, again. I am no longer going to subject myself to the torture people call small talk. Instead, I will demand people ask a question that contains more depth. Because if we’re not trying to make a connection, then what do we need to talk for?
