On November 3, at Minute Maid Park in Houston, lines wrapped around the building as thousands of people waited to enter Ed Sheeran’s highly anticipated concert.

The openers of the night were Lauv and the returning Snow Patrol. Both played “Like Me Better” and “Chasing Cars”, the songs they were most widely known for.

After a short guitar solo, Sheeran sang the first line of one of his most popular songs: “Castle on the Hill.” The response of the crowd was animated and lively, as they sang back the next phrase.

“I’m gonna play a song I wrote when I was 18, singing to two people in a pub who weren’t listening. And now, I’m singing at Minute Maid Park in front of 40,000 people.” Sheeran said, before launching into “The A-Team,” his first hit song.

Before playing “Don’t,” Sheeran explained how he directed his concerts.

“We’ve got two ways we are going to enjoy this show. The first way is dancing – I will not be part of that because I only know one dance. The second is singing. There is no such thing as can’t sing. You can sing…”

Sheeran wanted to make his audience feel connected with him. Throughout the concert, he cracked jokes and shared many anecdotes, including one about his opener, Snow Patrol.

“The first time I came to Houston, it was with Snow Patrol and I was their opening act. And now, it’s just so amazing to have them back here with me.”

Then, on a “completely irrelevant [note]”, Sheeran said, he played “Happier,” a sad, but beautiful song.

Stepping back from involving the crowd, Sheeran asked for a “universal silence” so that he could play “Tenerife Sea,” creating a special moment for himself and everyone at the park.

After his popular and upbeat song, “Galway Girl,” Sheeran launched into his own version of “Feeling Good.”

“Now, we’re approaching the major sing-along part of the show and these are the songs you’ve probably heard on the radio a lot, so please belt them out,” Sheeran said.

In succession, Sheeran played “Thinking Out Loud,” “Photograph,” and “Perfect.” During the last song, he asked for everyone to put up their flashlights, lighting up everything like a thousand stars.

The supposed final song of the night was “Sing.” However, after he left the stage, the crowd cheered and screamed and chanted for him to come back.

Answering the plea, wearing a brilliant white Houston Astros jersey, Sheeran left the concert with “Shape of You” and “You need me, I don’t need you.”
