Remarkable.
If Mr. Shed’s journey through life, from childhood to now, had to be wrapped up into one word, that’s what it would be; remarkable. Unfortunately, Mr. Shed’s chapter here at Judson High School, is coming to a close.
Though he’s known by many here on campus, he has an incredible story that still remains overlooked. This is a story with many lessons to offer, and one that Judson High School is fortunate enough to be a part of.
His humble beginnings in the streets of New York taught him humility. His outstanding basketball career in the 60’s, and subsequent career-ending injury taught him perseverance. It’s hard to imagine what more JHS could teach someone who’d already been through many peaks and valleys in life. Nevertheless, Shed still reinforces the idea that in life, no matter where you are, you never really stop learning
.
“This is all just a part of my life, where I continue to learn the ways to give back to others what God has blessed me with. Hopefully, my spirit will have carried on with multiple kids,” Shed said.
Shed himself is a teacher in more ways than one. On top of being the ISS teacher here at Judson, he’s also a motivational speaker, and directs a summer training camp for the San Antonio Spurs.
Even though his role as the ISS teacher, amidst everything else, may seem small, the respect and admiration he garners from his other JHS staff members is immense.
“It’s more than what he’s done in his personal life, it’s more about what he’s done here at Judson High School. He’s helped our students by teaching them important morals and values,” interim principal Mr. Guiterez said.
Shed is adamant about his departure from Judson High School not being a final goodbye, but simply a “to be continued…”. Despite his ambiguity about his future involvement at Judson past his retirement, it’s certain what he intends to do with his time on a larger scale.
“I plan to spend a lot more time at home, of course. This
will give me a little more flexibility with traveling to different schools, churches, industries, and even cities outside of San An
tonio. I am retiring from one part of my journey and doors are opening to other parts,” Shed said.
There is no doubt that Shed is impactful no matter where he goes, and while he’s leaving his position and place at Judson, he hopes to leave the students of JHS with words of wisdom they can take with them wherever they go.
“One must walk by faith. Faith comes in all levels, colors; through times of strength and weakness. If you believe in what you want, and if that makes you happy, then that it was you have to go out after,’ Shed said.
