Volleyball hosts Dig for the Cure; falls to Wagner

After coming off a 3-2 win against East Central, the Lady Rockets were hoping to come out with another win when they played their annual Dig for the Cure game against their rival Wagner Thunderbirds (0-10).
Their annual Dig for the Cure game is an event to represent all the women that are fighting against breast cancer. Before the game started, the lady Rockets had a tribute to a few breast cancer survivors.
“This game is very important because it’s not about the athleticism in the game but about recognizing our cancer survivors and making sure they get that recognition for what they fought and went through,” head coach Shannon Harrison said.
Both teams started off fast. Wagner took an early timeout to adjusts their line up with the score of 9-5, Judson. With Wagner slowly coming back to make it a 16-12 game, Judson took a timeout to figure out a game winning plan. Despite Wagner giving Judson 5 points due to their mistakes, they still managed to stay in the game with a score of 23-21, Judson. With an intense first set, Judson took the first set, 25-23.
With the second set, both teams started off with some aggressive defense to make it a low score game, 7-5, Judson. With a tough second set, both teams weren’t willing to giving up any easy points, making it a tie game, 12-12. With Wagner taking their first lead of the second set, it caused Judson to take a timeout to figure out a game plan. After an amazing defensive performance by both teams, Wagner held on to take the second set, 22-25.
Wagner took an early lead in the third set to make it a 1-4 score and caused Judson to take an early timeout. With Wagner continuing their aggressive defense, Judson took another timeout and adjust their line up and try to find an answer for Wagner’s defense. Their aggressive defensive strategy helps them win the third set with a score of 12-25.
Harrison’s game plan to slowly stop Wagner’s aggressive defense help tie the game at 7-7 in the fourth set. Wagner was forced to take a timeout because of Judson’s adjustments, which allowed a slow comeback with Judson trailing by just 2 points,11-13. However, it wasn’t enough to take down Wagner in the fourth set. Wagner’s defense helped them seal the fourth set with the score of 20-25, taking the game 3-1.
The Rockets fell to a record of 2-9. They are hoping to redeem themselves when they face off against a tough Clemens team (7-4).
