Mortal Kombat X is the tenth main installment of the Mortal Kombat video game series, developed by NetheRealm studios. It was released on April 14, 2015 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft. Mortal Kombat X is a combat game in which two players battle against each other using a variety of special moves, attacks and bloody fatalities.

The story mode begins with Shinnok attacking Earthrealm. A strike team led by Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and Kenshi open a portal to Raiden’s sky temple. While heading to the Jinsei chamber, they encounter Raiden and Fujin battling Shinnok. Jinsei distracts Shinnok long enough for Raiden to steal his amulet and imprison him within it. However, Quan Chi manages to escape. Sonya and Johnny track him to his lair defeating him and return Scorpion and Sub Zero to human form.

Twenty years later, Johnny assembles a team of fighters, which include Cassie, Takeda, Jax’s daughter Jacqui, and Kung Lao’s cousin Kung Jin, and undergo training with Sub Zero. They are later deployed to Outworld to resolve a civil war between former empress Mileena, who has obtained Shinnok’s amulet from Kano, and Outworld’s current emperor Kotal Kahn.

Kano is captured by Sonya and forced to reveal MIleena’s location. With the new information, Cassie and her team help Kotal recover the amulet. Kotal then captures Cassie and her friends and imprisons them. D’Vorah, who is later revealed to be a double-agent for Quan Chi, manages to steal the amulet. Cassie and her team find a way to escape captivity and inform Earthrealm of D’Vorah’s intentions.

After fighting his way through the revenants, Jax captures a weakened Quan Chi, bringing him back to Earthrealm and putting him in an Outworld refugee camp.

With the intentions of assassinating Quan Chi, Scorpion infiltrates the camp defeating Kenshi, Johnny and Sonya in the process. D’vorah appears and Quan Chi manages to cast a spell releasing Shinnok from the confines of the amulet, before being decapitated by Scorpion. Shinnok and D’Vorah then assault the sky temple, where they defeat Raiden. Shinnok enters the Jinsei, corrupting it and turning himself into a powerful demon in the process

At the Sky Temple, Jacqui and Takeda keep the revenants busy, while Cassie and Jin enter the Jinsei chamber. Once there Cassie defeats D’Vorah and Shinnok, and then successfully saves her father. A badly wounded Raiden purifies the Jinsei, stripping Shinnok of his powers and forcing the revenants to surrender.

Not only does the new Mortal Kombat X include a great plot, but it also includes new characters players can use when battling. The game also gives fighters three different variations, which each include different sets of moves they can use during battle.

The modes included in the game are Story, 1 vs. 1 Ranked, King of the Hill, Survivor, and Test Your Luck. A new addition named Living Tower, which is an evolved form of Mortal Kombat’s Challenge Tower where the play conditions change after every hour. Another new additional mode is Faction Wars, where the players have to choose one of the 5 factions to fight with in a cross-platform competition with the others.

Despite the grotesquely disturbing fatalities and having characters from previous installments taken out, Mortal Kombat X has brought a new transition to the Mortal Komabt franchise that will continue to be peoples favorite. If you like battling to the death, a smooth and entertaining story mode and bloody fatalities, than Mortal Kombat is the game for you.
